I learned to sew from my grandmother and mother when I was a child. I dusted off my sewing machine in adulthood out of necessity: My pockets in women’s pants were too darn small. After teaching myself to extend my pants’ pockets to a reasonable size, I ransacked my house for old sheets and linens to upcycle for various household sewing projects. Then, during the COVID pandemic, I opened an Etsy shop to sell social justice-themed face masks.

In recent years, my sewing has focused on making sweet gifts for my loved ones, repairing my kiddo’s stuffed animals (aka emergency surgery), and commissioned projects for family, friends, and neighbors. I have made things like a tooth fairy pillow for my friend’s kiddo, an insulated ice cream koozy that fits a 1.5 quart tub of ice cream, and custom curtains for a neighbor’s A-frame pop-up camper.
